Redfish Series Tournament #1 - June 21, 2008

Thanks to all the participants, volunteers, and sponsors for their support with the 1st tournament of the 2008 CCFA Redfish Series!  Despite the tough weather conditions, 35 teams came out for some friendly competition.  Anglers had several hours to locate their fish before thunderstorms set in for the day.  Tournament competitors along the NC Coast proved to be a tough bunch of fishermen as 22 teams managed to brave the conditions and weigh in slot sized Redfish!  Great Job Anglers and thanks for your support.  Keep in mind that your participation is helping to raise money for the CCFA's Hatchery Fund.  We look forward to seeing everyone at the next event scheduled for Aug. 9th.  Please email your suggestions on how to improve on the tournament.  The tournament committee will post any changes as soon as possible.
The fish weights for this first tournament included the weight of the fish bags (approx. 10oz. per bag).

Redfish Series Tournament #2 - August 9, 2008

Thanks again to all participants, volunteers, and sponsors for your assistance with the 2nd tournament of the 2008 CCFA Redfish Series.  Our tournament was again a success with a 34 boat field and beautiful weather with just one quick afternoon thunderstorm.  17 boats came to the scales with Redfish to weigh and release.  No one brought the tournament tagged Redfish to the scales for a brand new Chevrolet Truck during this event.  Two Teams, Powell/Nelson and Cronk/Taylor tied for first place with 14.26lbs but Powell/Nelson made it to the scales first to secure the lead.  The largest redfish was weighed in by Cronk and Taylor at 7.4lbs and Sewell and Orr took home the Multiple Spot category with a redfish covered with 7 spots.  Please remember that your support in this tournament also means your support  in the sport of recreational fishing as all proceeds are directed to support the CCFA's goals.

Charter Boat Captains,  Click> TWIC <Click for the current information regarding the Transportation Workers Identification Card that the Department of Homeland Security is now requiring nationwide.  You must now be compliant by April 15th 2009.  The link at the beginning of this paragraph has a section for pre-enrolling.  Basically, you'll need to create a username and password, enter some of your personal information, schedule an appointment at a near-by TWIC office using an online calendar (closest office along the crystal coast is on the Atlantic Beach Causeway).   Make sure you print out your appointment confirmation page.  The appointment takes about 15 min.'s   If everything checks out ok, you'll be contacted via email or phone that you were approved and to come back to the same location to pick up your card.... I would suggest going back onto the website when you are informed you card is ready... and schedule a pick up appointment.  You cannot call the office to schedule the appointments..... and if there is no appointment schedule you will be at the end of the line behind those with scheduled appointments.  Good Luck!

THE CRYSTAL COAST'S INSHORE/NEARSHORE FISHING FORECAST- August

The redfish continue to inundate the backwaters of Swansboro but the hot
temperatures at mid-day have slowed the bite during the lowest part of falling
tide.  The best action has still been on topwater baits and Berkley Gulp Pogies
and Shrimp fished on Jigheads, Spinnerbaits, and Popping corks.

There are plenty of flounder on the internal waters with a lot of undersize fish
in the deep water around the ICW and inlets.  The larger fish are holding around
rocky structure, bridges, dock pylons, oyster rocks, and around area grass
flats.  The best baits will include 4 to 6in. live mullet fished on carolina
rigs and light bucktails or jigheads tipped with a berkley gulp pogie.

Chopper blues along with many lady fish are working the shoals around the inlets
and the sand flats around Bogue Sound and White Oak River.  These fish can be
found busting through large schools of finger mullet on the rising tide.  The
best action has been from the 2nd to 4th hours of rising tide using topwater
baits.  Be sure to put a short leader made of seven strand or heavy flourocarbon
in front of your topwater baits to avoid or minimize cut offs.  Also be very
careful unhooking both of these species as they like to shake and jump violently
when hooked.

The sheepshead bite has been off one day and on the next with most fish ranging
from 1/2lb to 3lbs with a few big fish being reported around the oyster rocks
and grass flats.  Most of the fish around the bridge and dock pylons have been
smaller.

There are still a few speckled trout ranging from 1 to 3 lbs coming from the
Swansboro waterfront and bridge area, as well as Bear and Brown's Inlets.  The
deeper inlet connecting channels will have some specs moving through as well.
The best action will come off live shrimp, soft plastics fished on light
jigheads, and mirrolures.
